Basic Element is involved in managing the Vanino port, is building a seaport in the Imeretinsky lowland (Sochi) to handle Olympic cargo and is developing stevedoring and freight forwarding in the Far East.
Promising port-related projects include building specialized terminals for grain, alumina and other commodities at Vanino; developing a large transport hub at the Dnipro-Bug seaport; converting the Imeretinsky port into a yachting marina; and building specialized terminals in the Leningrad region. Modern technologies and core competencies are being acquired to develop the port business.
Vanino Port - a sea, rail and automobile hub for cargo shipments to northeastern Russia, Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, the United States and other Asia-Pacific countries. An advantageous location provides the most immediate access to the sea for cargo originating in the West and shipped via the Baikal-Amur and Trans-Siberian railways.
The port consists of 16 docks, open and enclosed warehouses, and is capable of handling ships with deadweight of up to 45,000 tonnes.
Throughput in 2009 was 6 million tonnes, consisting mostly of timber and logs, alumina, ferrous and nonferrous metals, ores, coal and containers.
Imeretinsky Port, Sochi, will be built in line with a government decree (#991 of 29.12.2007) on the program for the construction of Olympic facilities and the development of the City of Sochi as a mountain climate resort, and its purpose will be to handle cargo shipments for the construction of the Olympic facilities. Plans exist to convert the port into a yachting marina in 2014.
The investment aspect of the project being implemented by Basic Element calls for the construction of eight universal docks to accept general and tanker cargo; coastal fortifications; coastal infrastructure; and the installation of technological equipment. The federal aspect of the project involves building breakwaters and deepening the port.
LLC Imeretinsky Port Sochi, set up in 2007, is responsible for designing, building and operating the Cargo District. The company is a member of Basic Element's Port Business Directorate. The General Contractor for the investment aspect of the project is CJSC Inzhtransstroy, a member of the Transstroy Holding. The first stage of the Cargo District went into service in April 2010 with the commissioning of two docks, capacity 2 million tonnes of cargo each. The docks are equipped with four Liebherr cranes (one LHM-280 and three LHM-180), material handlers and font- and fork-lift trucks. The docks can accept various cargoes, including ballast, sand, cement and general cargoes, including containers, needed to build the Olympic venues.
